Good Old Days

"It is unacceptable that we teach students the way we were taught.  We have so much more technological tools that we must use them to enhance the learning/teaching experience. "

Back then, we learned math, we were taught math.  Now they learn button pushing because that is what they need to pass the damn exams and that is what we are told to teach.

Should be so "many" more. The whole count vs. non-count English thing. I question the assertion that tech always "enhances" teaching. I would use it if I had it, which I do not, but tech is just one factor. I'd say there are other possibilities, and not seeing them reflects a lack of imagination on the part of anyone who declines to acknowledge them.

Nothing is always good, and that certainly includes technology. Witness those who require calculators to perform simple arithmetic--spell check to write, with errors they can't and don't catch--hardly an improvement.

Tech has its uses, but there are things that need a personal touch.
I saw a TV report that showed kids learning math through the computer.
Well, I used to always incorporate math games into my lessons that were not part of the "text".

Writing also needs the personal touch. It needs to be shared and discussed.

Most importantly, children need the tools to find information w/o needing a computer. Not every household has one, and heaven forbid if a computer should crash.

btw, whose quote is that??

I do not think there was anything wrong with the way we were taught. We had to use our brains and manipulatives as opposed to technological resources?

Sounds like he is nit picking again just to look for things..which of course is probably not a surprise.

I know he comes out with "gems", but then I thought it could be Bill Gates. Silly me.

That is just appalling. The lack of reasoning and critical reasoning in that statement is just...appalling.
