Good Old Days

Spring break is here. For more years than I can remember, I have been meeting with my AP students to review for the exam. It will be here before we know it.

Packemin is so big and overcrowded that it is almost impossible to get a huge chunk of time during the school week to do some heavy duty reviewing so this day really helps. Not all the kids can make it. Some are off on wonderful vacations and some are working, but I'm betting on a pretty full house.

"Ms. POd", they asked, "Why can't we review at your house?" I always make a lame joke about not wanting to hurt my property values but the truth is I don't want to be liable for the consequences should anything happen or should anyone say something happened.

Years ago, this was not an issue. I always had the kids come to my house. We often sat in the yard or the basement and I used an old blackboard that belonged to my children. My own kids grew up with my students around. My husband was used to them too. I'm not just referring to my AP kids, I've held the same kind of review sessions for my regents kids and even the kids taking the RCT.

I hate to be one of those people who romanticize the old days, but those old days were so much better. The school had no idea I was doing this, which was exactly what I wanted. What I did was between my students and me and I wanted to keep it that way. Now, I have to use the building. I have to get a permit and too many people know what is going on. I guess I just have to move with the times. The permit is signed, the review exam is run off and all that awaits is the big cram session on Tuesday. I've already told them to plan for another one the weekend before the exam. Hopefully most will make it then.

My geometry kids know that the AP kids are coming in. They told me I am cruel. I answered, "Wait, your regents is in June. We'll be here on at least one or two Saturdays before reviewing for that as well." They groaned, and said they would come.

You are right to be careful. Already, just a few months after he said that he wouldn't send anyone to the Rubber Room, my principal has started an investigation on a teacher whom a girl said hit her. THen the girl took it back, but he says that it is too late to stop now. I don't know who the teacher is -- it might even be me, who knows? I was told it was a male teacher, but the person might've been lying so I don't worry. Anyway, be as safe about everything as you can be. It's great that you're so dedicated. I am so disgusted with the tension of my day that I can barely think through a lesson...
