Scoop

My friend Ricochet is lamenting her students lack of work and the fact that she cares so much more than they do.

I had a similar discussion with my 7th period class a few weeks ago.

Boy 1:  Stop calling my house.
Me:      Nope, I want you to pass and I'll do what I have to in order to get you there.
Boy 2:  Why do you even care?
Boy 3:   She has to care.  If we don't pass, she gets fired!

At least this kid reads the newspaper.

I gave a final. I had a review. I worked every problem. Some several times. I let them use the review on the final. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE REVIEW AND THE FINAL WAS THE WORD REVIEW AND THE WORD FINAL.

Average grade: 51.

Priceless.

How disheartening that can be!! I've had that very experience with my kids.....along with being allowed to look at class notes and the review material. I just curved the sucker and chalked it up as a bad idea. It is a bad idea to ask kids who can't process language at their expected age/grade level to learn such abstract material. My hope always springs eternal in spite of it, as I'm sure yours has.

The words that come out of kids mouths...amusing.

Yesterday, on NPR's "All Things Considered", there was a nasty story pointing fingers at the teachers at Central Falls HS, R.Is.
The superintendent basically told the reporter that when students beat and shove teachers around (physically), he doesn't consider that criminal behavior.
I was outraged!
