Where else but a NYC public school would you find a teacher who picks up every piece of chalk when she leaves the room and carries it with her from class to class? Who would think that this is sometimes the only way a teacher can guarantee there will be chalk in the room?

Most of that looks "scrapy" (those yellows especially) but the small red and two of the blues are darker and look like they might be smoother. I only carry smooth chalk with me, and I take it when I find it. There's usually some in my shirt pocket. Right now there are 2 whites and a green next to this keyboard...
Down in Georgia, we paid for it, so we'll take it with us. And pick up the pencils the kids throw on the floor.
This is totally sad and says a lot about how public schools are treated.
Trust me, it would happen here in ChiTown, too. As Schoolgal said, what a sad statement about the treatment of public schools and their teachers.
It's my eraser, so that goes with me also.
I guess I am naive. I didn't even know teachers still used chalk. I haven't seen a chalkboard used in at least 12 years.
White chalk is everywhere, but if you want your colored chalk, you take it with you! (and I work at a university--the department pays for the colored chalk, though)
I want to know where Mrs. H. works. We're still very low-tech at our school. No white boards or Smartboards, here. :( Just good ol' fashioned chalkboards.
I know, though, that most schools around here (aka suburban schools!) have the latest technology, including Smartboards, and projectors for their (district supplied!!) laptops. I'm lucky I can get a damn piece of paper. As a matter of fact, I was just turned down in the office when I asked for a ream of paper for my printer. You know, the printer that I have to personally buy ink for!!!
