I was about to post about Building A Better Teacher, an interesting article in this Sunday's NY times but my buddy NYC Educator did it better than I ever could. (The article offered no real help on dealing with difficult situations.
The one line I came away with is
“Sweetheart, we don’t do that in this classroom because it keeps us from making the most of our learning time.”
I wonder if that will work in my ninth period class?

Wouldn't work in any of mine.
I dare you to try it and report back to us!!!
I did try it, without the sweetheart. I didn't want to end up in the rubber room. It didn't work. I wasn't surprised.
Too funny!! Of course this works for him because his clients are hand-picked charter school kids.
I tried it! I even said "Sweetheart" and the student I said it to was a freshman male!
His answer? "F*ck learning!"
I love it when students act predictably. Unfortunately the phone in my room has been broken for weeks so there was no way to have Sweetheart ejected.
thanks for the links (again). you NYC teachers are a bloggy bunch. Have you noticed that now that nobody has any money for teachers, instead of saying, gee we're so sorry that times are tough but it's teachers or (whatever they want to use to fill in the blank to balance a budget)...instead they say how awful all of us are. it's an interesting wrinkle on tough times.
