I might be quibbling about nothing, but getting a diploma and earning a diploma are not the same thing.

Don't you wish the Powers That Be knew the difference?!

It's becoming increasingly clear that having the "power of the pen" over the kids I teach is not as effective a tool as it used to be. Many kids just don't appear to care. The kids think, "why work hard at all if I can go to "boot camp" or "evening school" and do "credit recovery" in a week." This is the same credit that used to take 5 months with only summer school as the alternative to failure. The "easy way out" has become the educational way of life. There are a number of kids who do know the difference between earning a diploma and getting one. Unfortunately, the focus is not on them, but on the at-risk, less academically able student.
