Principal Suit stopped me in the hall tonight and thanked me for my letter. He told me it was just what he needed and that it was right on the money. He said a guard would be posted outside the trailers.
I'll believe this when I see it, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

Thank you for speaking up.
I hope he really didn't mean:
"Listen you b*t*h, I don't want you getting the media involved!
I won't have you spoiling my bonus! So I will post some lousy guard for the next 3 months and hope that you retire the end of June!"
It just sounded like, "Thank you!"
(Of course, I hope he really meant thank you.)

Smart move on his part!
Appease your anger and make it seem like he cares! Smarter than my skunk of a principal but then again my a-hole principal is the dumbest mother f*&^er I know!
I will still go to the press if nothing is done.
I stood up at our departmental meeting and read the letter while we were supposed to be filling out school surveys. I wanted everyone to know what had transpired.
And their reactions????

I think he really meant, "Thank you for saving my ass in case the parents decide to sue after all. I had no idea what happened because I was in my office enjoying my new furniture. I'll put a school safety officer by the trailers and hope it appeases everybody."
wow that was a great move. When I was in a trailer two of my students got into a physical fight. I was calling for help and no one responded. There was blood everywhere in the class. Me, like a jerk tried to help the kid who was bleeding profusely. I didn't have gloves on . My instinct was to help the kid. About three weeks later I was really really sick. To make a long story short I had contracted Hep. B. This was more then 10 years ago. Back in those days the UFT contract said that we weren't supposed to lose days in our car if we had contracted Hep. B. I had to borrow 20 days in order to recover. I was not paid for the days I had to take. I have never been able to recoup my 20 days and guess what? They sent me to medical for clearance to go back to work. They (DOE) denied me any compensation. I beleive I contracted it as a result of my contact with the kids blood. I was treated like shit. All my principal cared about was that I didnt sue the school! If I knew then what I know now I could have really sued the school. You live you learn. Take care of yourself and thank you for being brave and standing up for the kids! Imagine if we were all on the same page we could really move mountains.
Wow, that is some story.
I probably would have done the same as you then. Now I am phobic about touching blood.
Schoolgal--the reaction was silent shock--I don't think anyone will do anything. I jsut wanted them to know what was going on before they filled out their school surveys.
As we have seen from virtually every social movement which has occured in the US, change requires a grassroots groundswell. Mad props to you, pissed off!
