My Best Subject

I have a kid with a zero average who tells me math is his best subject so he doesn't have to do any homework or classwork. My blogging buddy, Ricochet has one who wants to be graded on potential.

What a world we live in. I blame it all on NCLB.

Ten years ago or so I attended a parenting class at church which was talking about the problems we were about to have with our children.

They talked about the civil rights movement, which led to the women's rights movement, then the gay rights movement, then other movements.

The children born in the 1980s and 1990s grew up with all of these "rights" - thinking they were entitled to what previous generations have worked for.

Look at the state of black education. Walter Williams and others have talked about how important education was to black families prior to the 1960s. And it isn't just that demographic.

NCLB is a symptom. The disease is further advanced than that.

I think we will survive. But this is definitely a rocky patch.

I don't remember what kind of a student I really was (better than most that I teach, not as good as I could have been), but I do know I always wanted to learn for learnings sake.

Merry Christmas and Happy Jamaica!
