No Help Available

The boy who did not pass the regents wanted to retake it in August. The first day of summer school he sought out people he thought would help him. Two were deep in conversation, probably discussing the best place to get a drink and did not even acknowledge his existence. Another looked at the young man and exclaimed "You don't know anything. Mrs. Fish, your ninth grade teachers is awful and you never learned any algebra."   The boy left.   His future is uncertain. He has no clue as to whether he can take the test or not. No one wanted to be bothered. You see, the boy has an IEP and the administrators only want him to disappear.

That's infuriating. I wonder how many times a day that happens. Ugh!

As a teacher still at this school I can tell you PLENTY of times!
The Administration has no background and no knowledge both formal and informal of students with disabilities. It is the new wave of administrators and teachers-take a weekend course in special education and you are set to go!

Well said. Replacing an ISS AP and having the ISS teachers fall under the respective AP of their license area saves a ton of money but at what price? Im fortunate that the AP I am under cares and has the common sense to see and know the challenges of teaching in a self contained classroom, but I know other ISS teachers who tell me their mainstream APs lack a real understanding of the challenges and reality of working with SWDs. Your post brings forth yet another reality of how things have changed for the worse under Bloomberg's rule. It is a shame and sin that the public is hardly aware of these truths!
