Vacation On The Cheap III

A good day out can be found on Governor's Island.  You can get there for free on early weekend ferries from Brooklyn and Manhattan, $2 round trip after or $6 each way on East River Ferry.  The island is federal park land and you can spend hours just walking or riding bike round the island.  There is lots of public art and many of the buildings house art galleries.  Often you can find artists at work along the way.  There are food trucks with lots of good, reasonably priced food, a really cool beach bar where they sell snacks.  It comes complete with palm trees, volley ball nets and kooz ball.  There are benches and tables and all weather couches.  You can even bring your own food and eat here or picnic anywhere.  If you are a history buff there are several tours, also free, of forts and island.

After a day in the sun, there are plenty of good reasonable dinner places in Brooklyn, lower Manhattan or anywhere ferry stops.  All you need is a metro card and some energy.

great restaurant in the LES, Cafe Petisco, on East Broadway, across the street from the Seward Library. Its a hidden secret of the neighborhood but a great spot to frequent for dinner, coffee and tea, brunch, etc. Its not so cheap but it is reasonable and a definite, you will not regret going. The staff and owners are fabulous too.

Another great spot (and very cheap) is Benny's on Ave A and E 6 Street. The menu offers a variety of authentic and fresh Mexican food , meat and as well as vegetarian (very large vegetarian menu). Happy hour drink deals 1/2 price 7 days a week from 4-6 (it may be 7, not sure).

Another good eats place and also reasonably price, Parmy's Persian on 1 Ave, around the corner from St Marks.

A day I recently spent with my husband and good friends on Governor's Island felt like a vacation, in spite of the fact that it was a mere 8 minute ferry ride from the Brooklyn pier. Not only did it have the art studios and installations, but there was a fun bar designed to feel like it was on a tropical beach. There are free tours of historic forts available as well. The views of Manhattan are unbeatable. Anon, thanks for the recommendations!
