Money Isn't Everything
I could have taught a sixth class which would have boosted my pension by big bucks, but I decided life is too short to work so hard. You never know when your last day on earth will be and I don't want mine to be spent slaving away.

Totally agree. I could have worked an extra year when the raise increase kicked in, but I knew I wouldn't survive the year the way I was feeling.
I'm with you (although not at all close to retirement, with a forty-something career change to teaching). In my department of 15 teachers, we have 4 teachers picking up a 6th period. That means we are one period short of a whole new teacher. My district, however, is choosing to pay a huge penalty rather than hire enough teachers to comply with our state class-size limits. Cheaper to pay four teachers to teach an extra period than pay salary and benefits for a new teacher.
